Male African Lion on the Lookout

The male African lion (Panthera leo) is one of the most recognizable animals in the world, instantly distinguished by its magnificent mane, which ranges in color from blonde to black and grows fuller and darker with age. Males are significantly larger than females, weighing between 330 and 550 lbs and stretching up to 8 feet in body length. They live in social groups called prides, typically alongside one or two other males, and their primary role is to defend the pride’s territory — which can span over 100 square miles — from rival lions, hyenas, and other threats. A male’s roar, used to assert dominance and communicate with the pride, can be heard up to 5 miles away.

Despite their fearsome reputation, male lions spend a large portion of their day resting — up to 20 hours — while females do the majority of the hunting. Males will feed first at a kill, though they are capable hunters in their own right. Their reign within a pride is often short-lived, typically lasting just 2–4 years before they are challenged and displaced by younger rivals. Today, African lions are listed as Vulnerable, with wild populations estimated at only 20,000–25,000 individuals, threatened by habitat loss, human conflict, and declining prey availability.
